
Why Testing is Crucial for Steels: A Journey into the World of Strength and Toughness

As Product Manager of Toolox steels at SSAB, I would like to comment on the differences between Toolox 33 and 1.2311.
Toolox is a steel with a chemical composition that contains less carbon than alloy steels type 1.2311. Carbon is commonly used because it is a cheap way to increase hardness, but decreases other mechanical properties. By replacing carbon with quenching and tempering treatment, along with other alloying elements, ductility can be combined with mechanical strength. In particular, in larger dimensions, the mechanical strength of Toolox 33 exceeds that of 1.2311 without becoming brittle.


Another significant difference is that Toolox 33 is a steel with much fewer impurities than 1.2311, which is reflected in the guaranteed phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) content (certificate attached). This is one reason why fatigue resistance is excellent. Additionally, recent fatigue test results show that, compared to the steel known in Sweden as SS2514 (34CrNiMo4/4340/F126), the service life of Toolox 33 is several times longer. This makes Toolox a more reliable choice for applications that involve repetitive loading, such as in vehicles.
Finally, it is important to note that the quality of 1.2311 steel can vary significantly depending on the manufacturer. However, Toolox, being a SSAB product, will always offer consistently high quality.
