Tool Steel

A steel designed
to transform
the future

Tool steels are high quality steels, which are generally alloyed for use in the manufacture of tools and components. They are manufactured in special kilns and in certain situations are recast to increase their properties.
Tool steels are ideal for:

Industrial blades for grinders (Top Quantum)

steels

High resistance
to wear and high
temperatures

Capacity for cutting other
materials

Great stability and
tenacity

Easy
machining

How to choose the appropriate
tool steel

4 factors to take into account to choose your tool steel:

1. The hardness required by the application the steel will be used for.

2. The working temperature of the steel.

3. The materials that the steel will work with: stone, steel, plastic, etc.

4. The type of work to be carried out: cutting, deformations, pressing, etc.

How to choose between 1.2080 and 1.2379?
There is an age-old rivalry between these steels. For the application of a blade for ceramic, 1.2080 steel is twice as resistant as 1.2379 steel, as only resistance against abrasive wear is necessary.
Conversely, if we use a 1.2080 blade for a sheet cutting system, it would break due to not having the necessary tenacity, which 1.2379 possesses.

Toolox® may be a perfect solution for tool steel. It allows material and machining time to be saved thanks to its chemical composition allowing hot cutting. It is a pre-treated steel which can be used as a substitute for various qualities, depending on the final application.

Technical and mechanical characteristics of tool steels

It is a tool steel hardened in oil, with a high carbon / chrome content, and is highly resistant to wear. The alloying has a very high resistance to compression and has thorough hardening.

Tempering temperature: 930-960ºC.
Maximum hardness: 63-64 HRC

Applications:
Cutting tools, stamping, carpentry, wire drawing, sausagers and pressing tools, cold rollers, measurement tools.

Chrome-molybdenum tool steel for hot work. It also contains vanadium for increasing tenacity. The chrome content allows resistance in work at high temperatures. Steel with secondary hardening with good resistance to annealing. Maintains a high level of hardness and resistance to high temperatures. Good resistance to thermal fatigue, erosion and wear.
Steel with very high density, good ductility and hardenability. The tools can be cooled with water.

Applications:
For hot work, extrusion moulds and die casting, tools resistant to wear, die casting tools, pressing tools for light and heavy metals. For higher level requirements, we recommend ESR EFS.

Tool steel for cold work, with a high carbon content and high chrome content. D2 is an alloy with thorough hardening and is highly resistant to wear. It is hardened by air cooling for minimum distortion after the thermal treatment.

Applications:
It is used for applications of long-term tools where resistance to wear is important, such as cutting or formation dies and thread rolling dies, cutting tools, stamping, carpentry, moulding tools for plastics.

Better tenacity than D3.
Possibility of nitriding.

Transformation example

of Tool Steels

The client usually uses round steels for machining and obtaining toothed gears. They request that each gear is divided into 3 pieces of 120º. Using rounds, machining is necessary to eliminate the interior circle.

Studying their case, we designed a process with Toolox® 33, which improves the properties of the treated F125 that they used. This allowed hot cutting, optimising the steel used in the piece, and reducing machining time after cutting by 70%.

1: Hot cutting of several pieces = optimisation of the steel.
2: Mechanisation of cleaning = Savings on machining costs.
3: Final result = Steel with better properties, a longer lifespan and fewer repairs and replacements.
