Armox® steel: maximum hardness and resistance
Armox® is a family of ballistic and armor steel plates manufactured by SSAB in Sweden. Designed to protect against high-energy projectiles and blasts, they combine extreme hardness with high toughness and impact resistance. What once required very thick plates is now achieved with 50% less thickness. It offers:
- Ballistic and blast protection: stops rifle shots and resists blast waves.
Weight reduction: offers the same protection with thinner plates → more agile vehicles with SSAB steel. - Weight reduction: same protection with thinner plates → more agile armored vehicles.
- Precision and reliability in the workshop: controlled thicknesses, excellent flatness, low distortion, and easy welding.
- Certification: tested and certified according to international ballistic standards.
Technical characteristics
Armox® is a quenched and tempered steel that offers:
- Brine hardness (HBW): from ~480HBW (Armox®500T) to 640HBW (Armox®600T).
- Yield strength: ~1200–1250MPa, ultimate strength 1450–1800MPa, and good elongation (≥8%).
- Certified low-temperature toughness (Charpy).
- Identical balance between hardness to stop projectiles and toughness to absorb impacts without fracturing.
